Anzac Day Commemoration Services in London

In France Anzac Day is commemorated on the Saturday after 25th April each year so  that the hundreds of British people can cross the channel and be part of the services held in Picardy. Because of this postponement of a few days, Australian school groups are able to attend the Dawn Service at the new Australian War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London as well as participate in the Anzac Day Services in France. In 2004 the Queen opened the Australian War Memorial right in the middle of the roundabout at Hyde Park Corner. It is here at 5.30am that the Anzac Day Dawn Service is held. There are two other services held on Anzac Day in London – at 11.00 am at the Cenotaph and at noon in Westminster Abbey.

Every effort is made by PCI to ensure that secondary school student groups going to Europe participate in these Anzac Day Services are able to participate in all three services. However because the final selection of orchestras and choirs is made by Australia House, we cannot give any unqualified assurances before these decisions are made in London. The involvement in these services by the schools we have sent to Europe has included the reciting of prayers at the Dawn Service, performing in the Choir Loft in Westminster Abbey and leading the singing of the national anthems and the hymns.

If schools interested in participating in these Anzac Day services want to learn more about how everything unfolds, PCI staff will put them in touch with a number of schools who have already had this wonderful experience.
