Iconic Adelaide street ‘art’ receives facelift to mark 30th anniversary

One of Adelaide’s enduring street icons – the French-inspired Colonne Morris - has received a new lease on life to mark its 30th year.

The Colonne Morris is located on the corners of Hutt and Angas Streets, in front of the Angas Travel building.

New original artwork was commissioned for the distinctive column, which stands 3 metres high and is adorned with distinctive green fluting at its peak.
The services of local artist and Francofile, Craig Bowyer were engaged to undertake the task.

The Honorary French Consul, Christine Rothauser unveiled the new art on December 03.

The art depicts a colourful array of scenes from France, including the Mona Lisa, l’Arc de Triomphe,  & La Tour Eiffel.

Believed to be the only one of its kind in Australia, the distinctive Colonne Morris has a colourful history. Former Honorary French Consul, Dr Rex J Lipman, who was also the founder of Angas Travel, was given special permission by the Adelaide City Council to erect the eye-catching column. For the first decade eye-catching posters were sent from Paris to adorn the column ... with staff having to regularly clean off the graffiti that images of the can-can dancers of the Paris Lido seemed to attract.

“Whenever I return from France, I feel as though a small part of it remains with me.  I look up from my desk and there it is, a sight you see on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, yet it is right here in the heart of Adelaide,” says Jackie Male of Angas Travel.

Staff are very pleased with the resulting art work and in Kate's words, “The results conjure the heart and soul of France, and it adds something beautiful to cosmopolitan Hutt Street. People constantly tell us what an attraction it is. They are curious about its origins and why it is there.
We thought the 30th anniversary would be the perfect time to give it an artistic makeover.”

Angas Travel is a French travel specialist. It organises customised itineraries for independent travellers, takes school groups to the Western Front each year, and arranges French language, art and history tours for school groups and discerning clients who are seeking to fully experience the French way of life.

The majority of staff at Angas Travel have either lived in France or travel there regularly, and speak the language to some degree.

Members of the French Australian Chamber of Commerce (FACCI) were on hand to witness the unveiling.

03 December had a dual purpose – the unveiling of the new artwork, plus the Christmas get together of the French Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry with Angas Travel & their guests.  Angas Travel has recently joined the FACCI & this is an introduction to the group.

Some extra info on “Les Colonnes Morris” – just for interest & copied from various internet sites:

Advertising columns or morris columns (French: Colonne Morris, German: Litfaßsäule) are cylindrical outdoor sidewalk structures with a characteristic style that are used for advertising and other purposes. They are common in the city of Berlin, Germany, where 1855, the first 100 columns where installed. Advertising columns were invented by the German printer Ernst Litfaß in 1854. Therefore it is known as Litfaßsäule (Litfaß column) in Germany, and can be found all over the country there.

In France originally built by La Société Fermière des Colonnes Morris, from which they derive their name, they are mostly built and maintained today by the JCDecaux company, which purchased Morris in 1986

Advertising columns are most typically used to display advertisements in the form of posters; many such advertisements have traditionally concerned theater, cinema, nightclub, and concert announcements. Some are motorized and rotate very slowly. A few Advertising columns house Sanisettes or telephone booths. At the beginning of 2006, there were 790 Morris columns in Paris, of which 18 contained telephones and six contained Sanisettes. Some 233 Advertising columns are scheduled to be removed in the near future.

In 1986, JCDecaux acquired Société Fermière des Colonnes Morris, the French company that installed the first columns in France designed to promote shows and cultural events. JCDecaux brought them up-to-date and called on designers to create columns that incorporated related services. Today, the pillar-shaped billboard has become a “multi-service” column and includes public toilets, Internet terminals, telephone booths, ticket machines or newspaper kiosks.

BALET “THE GREEN / IN LIGHT AND SHADOW

Polish ballet has seldom turned to the music of Bach which has inspired so many choreographers. This inexhaustible resource has been used by Balanchine, Lifar, Petit, Cranko, Béjart, Robbins, van Manen, and Neumeier, to mention only the greatest names of the 20th century. Now the time has come for us – thanks to Krzysztof Pastor, a huge admirer of this music, who has planned an entire ballet evening to the music of Bach.

It will begin with Concerto Barocco by the legendary George Balanchine, an abstract ballet typical of his work, perfectly coordinated with the Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins. A new work by Emil Wesołowski to Bach’s music will also be featured. The great Dutch choreographer Ed Wubbe will present his original male ballet The Green, set to the choral introduction to the St. John Passion. To conclude, Krzysztof Pastor will show his own ballet hit, In Light and Shadow to the music of the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, which has already won loud applause in Amsterdam, Stockholm, Ankara, at the Edinburgh festival as well as France and Canada. This promises to be an evening of choreographic surprises.

These ‘money cards’ are still better value to use overseas than our normal credit cards which apply a % fee to every transaction plus an exchange fee.

Hint: If you have a journey proposed to the United States, United Kingdom or Europe in the near future (or even into next year)  you can buy a Visa Debit card now - it is then set at the current exchange rates (around .80USD, .50GBP & .60EUR - exceptional in any year!) - start with the minimum amount (AUD300) & these cards are "reloadable".

Monitor the exchange rates & buy as & when you want.

AIRLINES - January 2010 update

There are still very good fare levels available to most destinations, while some of the more popular travel times have reverted to normal fares (December/January & September holidays).  The business class fare levels are still eratic - at the moment very good fares are available with Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, V Australia & a few others.  The combinations fares in business class e.g. Singapore Airlines combined with Lufthansa, or Finnair combined with Qantas are very competitive - e.g. around $6100 + taxes to Europe.

If you are planning to travel please let your consultant know so that we can let you know if anything new comes along that might suit you.

Cathay Pacific - new seats in economy class - a fixed back & it tapers in above your knee level so allows a lot of extra leg room - also the seat in front of you is not going to descend into your dinner!  The seat pocket is now behind your legs, so it is all good for the taller traveller.

Qantas still have some amazing fares to Los Angeles, San Francisco & New York.

V Australia's business class is still set at a very reasonable level.

Air New Zealand, Qantas & Virgin Atlantic "premium economy" classes are also very popular - that little extra comfort without the big price tag.

Etihad & Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi is fast developing as a destination in itself with a Guggenheim Museum, a Louvre Museum from Paris & there will even be a Ferrari World - seems like something for everyone.  Architecturally it is going to be exceptional, so perhaps consider Etihad.
Adelaide does not have a direct flight, but we can use Qantas flights (Etihad codeshare) to connect via Melbourne.
We have some very good promotional material for Abu Dhabi in the office & you are very welcome to borrow from our library.

Air Austral is flying direct from Sydney to La Reunion (St Denis) & then on to Paris.  For a slightly different stopover, why not try La Reunion.  A good opportunity for some French language practice too!  La Reunion is a department of France (as is Tahiti & New Caledonia).

Wildlife Safari's have introduced some very interesting & reasonable packages including La Reunion & Mauritius.

The A380 aircraft is glorious!

Qantas, Singapore Airlines, & Emirates all operate these aircraft.

Margaret, Kate & Merilyn have all experienced travel on the A380 - we firmly agree that it is a superior product.  It is quieter, more spacious & airy - a very pleasant experience in business & also economy class.

The feedback from clients in the Premium Economy Qantas cabins has been very positive.

Click on the A380 image to visit the Airbus website and see more of the A380.

NEW DESTINATIONS for 2010

Cruising in the Baltic region is still #1 for most cruise lines, so the fare levels have remained pretty constant.

However, other cruise destinations are offering great fares.  The Mediterranean & Alaska have some very competitive fares—enjoy a 5* cruise at very reasonable rates.

The Dalmatian Coast remains a firm favourite, with Italy & Greece close behind.

The ease of cruising is the key—unpack once, visit a new destination each day & have everything included—accommodation, transport, meals.  It could not be easier. River cruising is still popular & there are new ships coming into service on the rivers all the time.  The Russian waterways especially are benefiting from ships that are a little more luxurious than in the past.

For land travel, China, Vietnam & Cambodia are still popular, however, we continue to be mostly involved with Western Europe.
Themed travel
is popular—cooking, bike riding, walking, theatre…..  if you have a special interest & would like us to find some sources for you,  please let us know.

One destination that is more prominent this year is the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.  There are some wonderful touring options for the Camino (for all or part of the camino).  It is interesting that there are so many different routes across the north of Spain, so many variations are possible.

PASSPORTS and VISAS

Travel to the United States now requires an online visa to be applied for at least 3 days prior to departure (ESTA).

This must be done by the traveller - please ask your consultant for directions to the website.

Visas are still required for a few countries around the world - China, Russia, some South American countries & more.   It is interesting to note that a traveller can transit China with a stop under 48 hours & it is not necessary to have a visa - so long as accommodation is confirmed & the traveller has an onward ticket to show on arrival.

An Australian passport must have at least 6 months validity for travel via some countries - even an overnight at Kuala Lumpur will require this.

Before any flight bookings can be made by Angas Travel, we must see a copy of your passport.  With heightened security issues around the world it has become vitally important that the name on the ticket is exactly as it is in the passport.  One letter wrong & the whole ticket has to be reissued & fees then apply.
